2020 Color Trends: Year of Biophilic Design!

As designers, we’re always looking forward. We are constantly on the lookout for the next big “thing”. So who says its too early to be looking at 2020?

Let’s take a look at some of the predictions for the hottest shades of 2020! Our inside look makes it abundantly clear that 2020 is going to be ruled by biophilic design: reuniting our lives with nature.

Behr is putting its money on this gorgeous shade of green. In their press release, they describe that “…(Back to Nature) perfectly captures the essence of subtle and effortless green that can be found in a wilderness landscape or an indoor garden.” Bring some of the outdoors in with you, and start living green in 2020. We at Apex Art Lab love to find the perfect art for whatever color palette moves you. Here is a collection of artworks that pair with Behr’s Back to Nature.

They say that blue is the most universally loved color. Well, Sherwin Williams knows, and has released that “Naval” will be the rising star of 2020.

Interior Design Magazine describes it as:

“Sherwin-Williams considers Naval a versatile neutral, reminiscent of the night sky—a space of infinite depth. The velvety blue morphs to suit its surrounding, whether used to create a statement in a room or as a subtle background that enables other elements to pop, such as leather furnishings and woven textiles.”

From Millennial pink comes this 2020 homage to the soft hue: “First Light” is Benjamin Moore’s 2020 pick. They describe it as “A fresh palette. A revitalized spirit. A soft, rosy hue blooming with potential. Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2020, First Light 2102-70, is the backdrop for a bright new decade.” Read about it on House Beautiful here.

PPG is staying in line with the others on the biophilia theme, selecting this knockout shade of blue. PPG says “the shade is a blend of cobalt and moody ink blue that imparts calmness and restful sleep while also offering the spirit of hopefulness – a precious commodity in a restless world.”

Let’s finish off this list with Valspar’s pick. Aptly named, Winter Calm, offers a warm & comforting medium gray. This is one of their twelve 2020 color picks, all reflecting this theme of biophilia. “Earth’s prescription for the chaotic, busy lives we all live is to bring the tranquility of nature and the outdoor world into the home. That’s exactly what we set out to accomplish when forecasting the 2020 Colors of the Year,” says Sue Kim, Valspar Color Marketing Manager at Sherwin-Williams. And there you have it! Those are some of the color trend predictions for 2020!

What can we learn from this? That we as humans innately crave an intimate relationship with nature, and contemporary designers are trying to address this need through their designs.
