Using plexi framing may be what you’ve been looking for!
Plexi displays generally fall under three categories: boxes, sandwiches, and sculptural displays. Here at Apex Art Lab we can advise and execute any of these three display options.
Let’s get into the nitty gritty of each and some cool ideas ripe for the stealing!
Plexi boxes are a rising trend in home design as the public gravitates more towards contemporary design. While once only frequently seen in museums, nowadays you will see plexi boxes in homes all over Seattle.
Plexi boxes can work to display 2D or 3D objects; kept “raw” or with added framing details. Let’s take a look at a few examples of plexi boxes done right.
On the right, we see an orchid mounted on a linen mat, inside of a plexi box. This is a good example of how to mix traditional aspect with a contemporary trend.
Here we have a really fun “raw” plexi display with a pompom mounted inside of a plexi box.
In this display, a large colorful painting is mounted inside of a raw plexi box. With that hot pink and a contemporary vision, no other framing elements are needed.
This plexi display offers two very unique display options: overlappedcorner joining, and the use of colored plexi for the walls.
Another example of colored plexi sides– although the mounting on these pieces is not professional (the curling/cast shadow) we still think this is super hot look!
Plexi sandwiches are when a 2D piece is- you guessed it- sandwiched between two sheets of plexi glass creating a contemporary “floating” look. Generally people use standoff hardware to mount plexi sandwiches to the wall, but one could also use a traditional frame with this presentation.
Let’s take a stroll through our plexi sandwich options.
The “Standard” plexi sandwich presentation mounts the art in the center of the pane, with a second sheet of plexi on top for protection; mounted to the wall using standoff hardware. This was a great presentation pick for this piece as the plexi highlights the beautiful natural edges of the fabric, and brings a contemporary twist to a traditional artwork.
Doing a plexi sandwich with a standard frame was a great choice for these leaning pressed botanicals– utilizes the beautiful wall color as a background for these elegant flora pieces.
For the sake of this conversation, let’s define “Sculptural plexi displays” as anything intended to be displayed in a room, not on the wall.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s delve into some cool sculptural plexi ideas!
I think the average person is most used to seeing sculptural plexi boxes in a commercial setting– like this beautifully executed product display at Tiffany & Co– they used an approach of layering to create a dynamic, but protected visual display.
Installation piece by Bahar Yürükoğlu uses hanging neon plexi to create an otherworldy installation piece.

This is a beautiful sculptural piece that perfectly melds the natural rock elements and the plexi through using an organically shaped plexi box to display this stone trio.
